In this enchanting city the past and present intersect in perfect harmony. Casually intermingled among ancient ruins and majestic cathedrals are the trappings of a modern metropolis: Skyscrapers, cafes, boutiques selling designer footwear. But of course what you seek first in the heart of Rome is its breathtaking history. A good place to begin is the Vatican, with its Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Works by Bernini, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Raphael are just a few of those on display, any one of which is worth hours of contemplation. Then the ancient ruins-Colosseum, Forum, Circus Maximus. And of course the Trevi Fountain for the obligatory coins promising your return to the Eternal City.

With its golden ochre and terracotta buildings, designer shops, and chic cafés, Portofino represents the height of Italian artistry and sophistication. Sip a cappuccino along the fabled marina or enjoy a day of shopping in one of the town's tempting little boutiques. As you look out over the harbor from the famous Hotel Splendido, it's hard not to admire the sleek, streamlined beauty of your Windstar ship.

Here's a tempting opportunity to visit charming and remote Italian coastal fishing villages that are not easily accessible other than by boat. After a 20-minute cruise, your first stop will be in the little bay of San Fruttuoso Village , the ancient residence of the Doria family. Its splendid natural surroundings are enhanced by the architectural beauty of its church and 10th century abbey. The imposing cliffs encircling the inlet, a small beach and lush Mediterranean vegetation, combined with the almost unreal absence of vehicles, creates a truly unique and enjoyable ambiance. Pause to savor the enchanting views as your boat remains in the bay for 10 minutes. Heading further up the coast you will reach Camogli , a typical small fishing village that was formerly the site of bustling shipyards that helped build one of the world's greatest merchant fleets. Camogli's original medieval setting was centered around a local parish church constructed on an island that was once completely detached from the mainland. Today, it is connected to the mainland by a square surrounded by colorful buildings including one of the Italian coast's most beautiful Baroque churches. During your 1 1/2-hour stay, there will be time for a guided tour followed by free time. Back aboard your boat, enjoy the 45-minute return cruise to Portofino. Cadiz, Seville on Your Own *
The tour to Seville will help you discover one of the most beautiful cities in Spain on your own. Seville has the third largest cathedral of Christianhood, the Reales Alcazares de Sevilla. Seville's cathedral occupies the site of a great mosque in the late 12th century. Later, Christian architects added the extra dimension of height . Its central nave rises to an awesome 138 feet (42 meters) and even the side chapels seem tall enough to contain an ordinary church. The total area covers 124,000 square feet (11,520 square meters) and it is the largest church in the world. See the the Capilla Mayor, dominated by a vast Gothic retablo comprised of 45 carved scenes from the life of Christ. Also, take a walking visit around the Santa Cruz Quarter, the old Jewish area of the city. This is the first barrio (area or neighborhood) tourists head for, and with good reason. It is the most picturesque and delightful part of the city, with narrow winding cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, where you can sit outside a bar, enjoy some tapas and watch the world go by, or wander through centuries-old gardens and relax on beautiful tiled benches. The area is bordered by Calles Mateas Gago, Santa Maria La Blanca/San José, the Jardines de Murillo and the Alcázar. The covered passageway heading off the Patio de Banderas (part of the Alcázar) called the Judería is worth visiting; enter the Patio from here and you'll get an unforgettable view of the cathedral. Return to your dropoff spot to go back to the yacht. Please note: This tour does not include lunch or entrance fees. Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

Cadiz, Jerez & Sherry Cellars *
Discover the secrets of the famous sherry land of the province of Cádiz, which produces the world renowned Jerez wine. Your tour will start with a drive to Jerez de la Frontera , a town only 30 miles from the sea and the city of Cádiz. The landscape you will see changes from the dry coastal plain to the fertile land near Jerez. The milder climate makes it possible to cultivate the grapes that produce the three main varieties of sherry. Jerez de la Frontera dates from Phoenician times, but first rose to prominence under the Moors, who called it Xerix or Sherrich "De la Frontera." The 19th century was a period of economic prosperity for Jerez, thanks to a partnership with English exporters and wine merchants launching the success story that the Jerez industry is today. You will visit famous local wine cellars where the time-honored blending process that is responsible for the quality sherry wines will be explained during your guided tour. Afterwards, a tasting of 2 different types of sherry "fino" and "oloroso" will be offered. Please note : Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as there are uneven surfaces, cobblestones and steps.

The rhythm of Lisbon invites you to join its captivating dance. This splendid capital city on the banks of the Rio Teja offers a warm welcome and an unparalleled blend of architectural styles. Elegant outdoor cafés line the cobbled sidewalks. Turn-of-the-century funiculars climb the scenic hills. Find the UNESCO sites of the Tower of Belem and the Monastery of the Hieronymites. And, everywhere, the city engages you with its easy style and remarkable charm.
