Da Nang, My Son Heritage Site
Da Nang, My Son Heritage Site
Nestled in a lush valley and surrounded by the Hon Quap Mountains, My Son is a stunning archaeological site that was once a Holy Land built in the 4th century. It served as the most important religious and intellectual center of the Champa kingdom, which thrived between the 2nd and 15th centuries. The site, with its towers rising dramatically out of the thick jungle and cut through by clear streams, reflects nine centuries of occupation. Through extensive trade relations with India, the Cham adopted Hinduism and Sanskrit, shaping their sacred culture. The Cham people, lacking agricultural land, relied on piracy and trade, often engaging in wars with the Vietnamese to the north and the Khmers to the west. My Son is considered the Champa culture's equivalent to other grand, Indian-influenced cities in Asia, such as Angkor in Cambodia, Bagan in Myanmar, Ayutthaya in Thailand, and Borobudur in Java. The Cham are best known for their brick sanctuaries, the Cham Towers and temples dedicated to their kings and various divinities, adorned with intricate carvings. Though heavily damaged by time and the Vietnam War, My Son is slowly being restored, and the remaining monuments evoke a sense of awe and contemplation, standing as striking reminders of this ancient culture.

Along the way, enjoy the picturesque views and tropical fresh fruits served during your journey. It included meeting areas, storerooms, living quarters, and more. The tunnels were instrumental in allowing the Viet Cong to control a strategic area of South Vietnam, stretching over 200 kilometers from Saigon to the Cambodian border. Today, preserved as a memorial park, two sections of the network are open to the public. At Ben Dinh, you'll have the opportunity to explore parts of the tunnels firsthand. For those feeling more adventurous, you can venture deeper into the tunnels, with your guide providing insights and guidance on the difficulty level.
