Additional Information
The Story
Fresh water flows east from the Great Lakes, the Canadian Shield, and the St. Lawrence River, arriving at the shallow Gulf of St. Lawrence where it meets the salt water confluence of the cold Labrador current and the Gulf Stream. The conditions are perfect for an explosion of marine life, as they were thousands of years ago, attracting indigenous communities and later, European settlers. This was the New World, and the Old World wanted it badly, drawn by resources the likes of which they’d never seen.
This area is still a prize, rich with architectural wonders, cultures, and spectacular scenery. In the course of a day, you might pass an 18th-century garrison, iconic lighthouses, and restored red brick warehouses brimming with galleries, microbreweries, and hip farmers’ markets. Watercolor fishing villages come to life under the squawk of seagulls. French conversations flow with the scent of fresh croissants from boulangeries. And colonial history is literally under your feet.
Insider Tips
- The Old Town part of Quebec is intoxicating in daylight, but in the evening it takes on a particular magic. With an overnight stay in Quebec City, you can walk through this sleepy European village after other tourists have retired.
- Few people know that Nova Scotia is one of the smallest, oldest wine-growing regions in North America. Vines were planted here as early as the 17th century, and the climate is ideal for whites and acid-bright sparkling wines. Try some if you get the chance.
- Bird watchers, make a note when you’re in Gaspé. If you take the voyage around Bonaventure Island, you will probably spot northern gannets (the park is home to the world’s largest colony), as well as other seabirds, including Atlantic puffins.
- Halifax is home to the Canadian version of Ellis Island, and you’ll find it at Pier 21. Nearly a million immigrants entered here at what is now the Canadian Museum of Immigration. Just a short walk away is the Halifax Farmers' Market, the oldest continuously running market in North America (dating to 1750).
- As you walk around the UNESCO town of Lunenburg, “the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America,” watch for the Lunenburg Bump on the colorful Victorian homes. The extended middle dormer is a trademark of the town, whose homes were crafted by shipwrights during their off season.

Founded in 1630 by Puritan settlers, Boston is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. It was a pivotal place during the American Revolution for the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. Tourists to Boston see the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the JFK Library and Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Aquarium, and the USS Constitution.

The perfect option for those who wish to discover the treasures of Gaspé by bus. Begin your tour in Gaspé, which is associated with the beginning of western history in North America; the cross that Jacques Cartier erected there in 1534 has made it the birthplace of Canada. Wherever one is in Gaspé, water - either fresh or salty - is never far away. Travel for 45 minutes to Forillon National Park, sure to be a unique adventure. The tip of Forillon, which was declared a Canadian national park in order to preserve the wild beauty of its coast, reveals various geological formations and phenomena up to 450 million years old. Its majestic landscapes cover a large area that is carved out of the sea, cliffs and mountains. Here, where the land joins the sea, are born pebble beaches, dizzying cliffs, small coves, rocky capes and fine sand beaches. The presence of 10 different rock formations, colonies of seabirds and enigmatic artic-alpine plants give this park its unique character. Visit Grande Grave and The Hyman & Sons General Store and the Blanchette House which have been anchored for more than 100 years in Grande Grave, testifying to the golden age and cultural diversity on the Forillon Peninsula. The Hyman & Sons General Store is full of treasures and occupies the ground floor of the original home built by William Hyman in 1864. When you step into the store's warm atmosphere of yesteryear, you'll discover the typical operations of the "company stores" operated by the major fish merchants and their huge inventory, including: canned products, patent medicines, china dinner services, farming equipment, fishing tackle, clothing, etc. Return to the bus to travel 30 minutes to the Micmac Center. This interpretation site showcases the Mi'gmaq First Nation's culture and community in Gaspé. Ancestors have maintained for decades good rapport with European fisherman and this relationship has influenced the natives even today. Through their interpretive activities, the site highlights the history of the community since the 16th century. Enjoy a snack and tea service of Bannik bread, maple syrup, soup and Labrador tea.
