Bordeaux has long been known as La Belle au Bois Dormant, Sleeping Beauty. And while the beauty part is undeniable, the sleeping part could be argued. Sure, the region is filled with treasures from long ago, including more than 350 historic monuments and buildings in the city alone. But the capital of Aquitaine is also home to a vibrant culture and, as oenophiles well know, is the gateway to some of France's most famous vineyards. In this UNESCO World Heritage city, 13th century cathedrals and 18th century palaces are commonplace. Venture beyond the city's borders to the chateaux of the Médoc region or to Saint-Émilion, a breathtaking medieval village set among the vineyards that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

La Rochelle is said to be the most lovely and unspoiled port city in France, and who are we to argue? Two 14th century stone towers guard the gateway to the medieval core of the city, the Vieux Port. And this is a city that is focused on ships. You'll find yachts floating in the Port des Minimes, ships in the stained glass of church windows, maybe even decorating the arcaded walkways that line the streets. Learn the art of brandy making with a visit to the Cognac region and the Hennessy maisson, dating back to 1765. While walking past the aging barrels, inhale the heady aroma-the escaping vapors known as "the angels' share."

Cherbourg, D-Day of Normandy - Utah Beach & Sainte Mere Eglise
You'll begin by boarding your motorcoach for the scenic drive to the small village of Sainte-Mère-Église, which played a dramatic role in the Normandy landings. Located along the route to Utah Beach, this town was a necessary place for the Allies to occupy in order to prevent the Germans from attacking the incoming troops. Early in the morning of June 6, 1944, American paratroopers descended into the town. One, John Steele, got his parachute hooked on the spire of the town's medieval church and hung there for several hours, feigning death, before the Germans took him prisoner. (This, and his later escape from the Germans, was depicted by actor Red Buttons in the film The Longest Day .) There were many casualties before the Americans finally occupied the town. After your photo stop at Sainte-Mère-Église, you will see the American Airborne Museum, the perfect key to understanding the sacrifices of these brave individuals. Then continue on to Utah Beach - the code name given to this landing spot on the Cotentin Peninsula - where at 6:30 a.m., on June 6th, the first American soldiers came ashore. Over the next six months, 836,000 G.I.s, 220,000 vehicles and 725,000 tons of supplies came onto the sand right here. After the stop drive back to Cherbourg. Please note : If time permits, your guide will stop at La Cambe. In 1944, one of the numerous American temporary cemeteries and today the largest German cemetery in Normandy (over 21,000 burials).

By building tall wind-breaks, Smith channeled the weather up and over the network of walled enclosures he built around the Priory ruins. He also carved the three terraces from the rocky, south-facing slope looking towards St. Mary's. Tresco, shrugging off salt spray and Atlantic gales is host to 20,000 exotic plants, many of which would stand no chance on the Cornish mainland, less than 30 miles away. Yet even at the winter equinox more than 300 plants will be in flower. All in all, the garden is home to glorious species from 80 countries, ranging from Brazil to New Zealand and Burma to South Africa. Subsequent generations have continued the development of the Garden, which is today a major attraction of the islands. Please note : Access is not a problem, the gardens are terraced but most have slopes that can be negotiated by a wheelchair although there are some steps. Wheelchair guests must be accompanied as the guide cannot undertake responsibility for them during the tour. Dress for the weather and comfortable sturdy footwear is recommended. If guests struggle to walk a distance there is a complimentary small shuttle bus from the pier to the gardens.

You'll set out on a guided tour through this lovely 2-story late Georgian manor adorned with beautiful furniture and master pieces of art. Visit the State Room, where all visiting dignitaries are formally welcomed. Next door is Candlestick Hall where the panels around the room, made in the early 19th century, are made from hand-painted wallpaper and depict scenes from Cervantes' Don Quixote. Visit the castle's two dining rooms: the Red Dining Room, which looks out over what is claimed to be the largest rhododendron bush in Europe, and the State Dining Room where official state dinners are served. You will also visit the Throne Room, where citizenship ceremonies are held; the State Drawing Room, which overlooks the Jubilee garden; and Lady Grey's Sitting Room. Stornoway, Bostadh Sands & Iron Age Village
Departing Stornoway; the capital of the island, you will head west towards the island of Great Bernera . Today you will visit the Iron Age Village of Bostadh located on a beautiful beach on the far west side of Lewis. After a severe storm in the spring of 1992 a series of stone structures were exposed on the beach at Bostadh. Excavations in 1996 revealed a complex of houses beneath the sand. It was then decided to backfill this site in order to preserve these structures. The tops of 2 of the houses can just be seen in the beach area where the ever-changing dune landscape exposes, then re-covers parts of the original structures . The main attraction now is the life-size replica of one of these "jelly baby" houses; so called because of their distinctive shape. Take time to walk around this remarkable reconstruction giving you an insight into the life of the inhabitants of this ancient community. Please note : Walking to the beach and the reconstructed house is along paths in the sand dunes and over a small wooden bridge, not recommended for those with mobility issues.. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Stornoway, Ancient Lewis & Blackhouse Village
Stornoway, Ancient Lewis & Blackhouse Village
On leaving the island capital of Stornoway, today's tour will take you across the island to the beautiful west coast and to Callanish. Described as Scotland's Stonehenge , the Callanish Standing Stones date from around 3000 B.C. There are a total of 32 stones in a circular and avenue design. It is thought that the site, one of several in the area, was constructed for astronomical observations. The stones stand like a petrified forest on the flat top of a peninsula which reaches out into East Loch Roag . Visit the excellent visitor center to learn more about the site and venture out among the stones themselves to experience their mysterious atmosphere. Continue around the west coast to the site of Dun Carloway Pictish Broch . Probably built some time in the last century B.C., it would have served as an occasionally defensible residence for an extended family complete with accommodation for animals at ground floor level. It would also have served as a visible statement of power and status in the local area. Rejoin your coach and travel north to Gearrannan Blackhouse Village , a reconstructed settlement of traditional blackhouses where people and animals lived in close proximity. The houses were made using dry stone masonry and have thatched roofs, distinctively weighted down with rocks. Visit the small museum, enjoy a display of a typical crofting activity such as weaving or butter-making (subject to availability) and take in the views at this dramatic site on the wild Atlantic coast.. Complete your circular drive as you head back across moorland to Stornoway. Please note : Access to Dun Carloway is by a relatively steep footpath, but it can be seen from coach. Any wheelchair users must be accompanied as the guide cannot undertake responsibility for them during the tour.
